Competitions

Competitions are not required for students, but are strongly encouraged. Our instructors help students set realistic goals, learn time management, and have confidence in all areas of life. Healthy stress helps to build confidence and prepare students for the real world, and we strive as teachers to instill this in our students.

LFMC

Louisiana Federation of Music Clubs, affiliated with National Federation of Music Clubs, is a competition held the last Saturday of February at ULM in Monroe, LA. Students must learn two pieces of their instrumentation and play them from memory for a judge. Golden cups are awarded to those with superior ratings every three years. Vocal, wind instruments, and string instruments are acceptable in solo or duet form for several genres. Ask your instructor for more information about this competition.

There are several other competitions  for all ages during January through February. Ask Mrs. Jess or check it out at NFMC.org. There is also information in the studio waiting room.

NFMC also offers several scholarships for graduating high school seniors as well as college students. Scholarships are not just for music majors but for anyone who is a musician. For information or any questions contact Mrs. Jess at 318-737-8220.

LFMC Junior Composers Contest

Students who enjoy composing have the opportunity to participate in this state wide competition. Students make their own music, notate and record it. Then it is critiqued and rated by a college composition teacher. Students who make first or second place in state have the opportunity to play at state convention in March and also have the chance to win money! First place winners will have the opportunity to compete in nationals.

Spring Composition Competition

This local competition allows students to think outside the box and gives them a chance to be creative. Each student will compose and notate their piece with the help of their teacher. The Saturday before our Spring Recital students will have a craft day where they decorate their composition, play theory games, learn about music history, and play their pieces.  A student from each level will win an award for the most creative piece and the neatest notation.
